Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! It is Monday, April 8. Ready for news?
Kidnapped U.S. tourist and her guide rescued in Uganda
Last Tuesday, an American tourist, Kimberly Sue Endicott (35), and her tour guide, Jean Paul Mirenge, who is from Congo, were kidnapped in Uganda by four men with guns who asked for a ransom for $500,000.
They were on a safari at the Queen Elizabeth National Park with an elderly couple from Canada. The kidnappers robbed the Canadian couple, but left them behind. They were rescued and are safe, but it was not known where Endicott and her guide was.
Yesterday, after 5 days, Ugandan police said that their security forces rescued them and that they are healthy and safe.
The company that planned the safari paid an unknown amount as ransom.
Uganda is considered a very safe place to travel, but kidnappings are more common in Congo, across the border.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it is U.S. policy to not pay ransom because it can lead to more kidnappings. Instead, they work with local authorities to rescue captives.
President Trump tweeted:
“Uganda must find the kidnappers of the American Tourist and guide before people will feel safe in going there. Bring them to justice openly and quickly!”
Update: Jennifer Hart drove her family to their death
Here is an update on the Hart family who died when their SUV lurched off of a cliff last March.
A coroner’s jury ruled that Jennifer and Sarah Hart intentionally drove off the cliff in northern California to kill themselves and their 6 adopted children.
Investigators testified that Jennifer was the driver who deliberately stepped on the gas after drinking five beers while Sarah and the children had high amounts of Bendaryl in their bodies.
Investigators also said that Sarah had performed internet searches about suicide, Bendaryl dosages and whether drowning was painful.
They said that, before they died, the neighbors in Washington, where they lived, reported the Harts to the state’s child welfare agency for starving their children as punishment.
The next day, the Child Protective Services (CPS) visited the house, but the family already left.
Investigators believe that Jennifer and Sarah decided that they would rather kill their children than allow them to be taken away by CPS.
A sheriff and coroner said there were reports of child abuse when the family lived in Minnesota and other states, but that there is no federal oversight. He said there is systemic failures and lawmakers should learn from this.
Five out of the six children’s bodies or body parts have been found and identified, but the sixth child, Devonte, is missing and presumed dead.
Political News Briefs: Homeland Secretary Nielsen resigns; Mulvaney says Dems will never see Trump taxes; U.S. designates Iran military group as terrorists
Here are three political briefs.
The first -- yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned after meeting with President Trump at the White House.
Trump tweeted that Nielsen will be replaced by Kevin McAleenan, who is the current commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
Nielsen is gone at a time the U.S. border saw almost 100,000 people detained at the border in March, its highest total of detainments in about 10 years.
Senior officials said that this is one of the main reasons why she was asked to resign.
There is still a national emergency at the border, declared by Trump in February.
The second news -- yesterday, on Fox News, White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said Democrats will never see President Trump’s tax returns.
Mulvaney also said this was old news and people don’t care because they elected Trump.
Democratic leaders have asked the IRS to provide several years of Trump’s personal and business taxes.
Last Friday, Trump said that he won’t release the information because he is under audit. This is the same reason Trump gave in the past for not releasing his tax returns.
But IRS officials have said taxpayers who are under audit are free to release their returns.
The third news — President Trump announced the U.S. has designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization.
AP News said this is the first time the U.S. has designated a part of another government as a terrorist organization.
The IRGC was formed after the 1979 revolution in Iran. It is an independent military group that reports only to the supreme leader.
AP News explained that it will make diplomacy in the Middle East more complicated. The IRGC said they would retaliate.
