Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! It is Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Happy New Year! Ready for news?

Kim Jong Un Ready For Meeting with Trump

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un gave a New Year’s speech.

He said he was ready to meet with President Donald Trump at any time to have an outcome that is welcomed by the international community.

But he warned that the North will take a different path if the United States continues to break its promises and continues with sanctions and pressure.

In the speech, Kim told South Korea he was ready to resume operations at a factory at the border and restart tours to North Korea’s Diamond Mountain resort.

So, we see that Kim’s position is that he is ready to work with the Trump administration, but that he is willing to abandon the relationship. We also see that Kim is still focused on building bridges with South Korea.

U.S. Military Deletes and Apologizes For NYE Bomb Tweet

The U.S. Strategic Command, the military division responsible for the U.S. nuclear arsenal, tweeted on New Year’s Eve that they would drop something much, much bigger than the traditional ball drop in New York City’s Times Square.

The tweet had a video of a B-2 bomber dropping two bombs and a massive explosion on a test site.

The military deleted that tweet a few hours later. They said their previous tweet was in poor taste and does not reflect their values, that they apologize and are dedicated to the security of America and allies.

The Strategic Command is based in Offutt  Air Force Base in Nebraska.

American Arrested in Moscow for Spying; Russian Maria Butina Pleads Guilty

A U.S. citizen, Paul Whelan, was arrested a few days ago in Moscow, Russia on suspicion of espionage (spying).

A Russian security agency said he was caught when he was in a spying operation and have started an investigation.

NPR reported that if Whelan is convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

The U.S. State Department said they are aware and have requested for access to Whelan. His family said he was a former Marine and was there for a wedding.

Several news articles suggested this could be related to a Russian citizen Maria Butina’s recent guilty plea for conspiring to act as a secret foregin agent in the United States.

Butina was an university student in the United States and developed relationships with people who worked closely with Republican politics and the NRA. She admitted to trying to influence them for Russia.

The FBI monitored her and arrested her in summer. She now faces up to six months in prison and then deportation to Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Butina was innocent.

Media analysts suggest that Whelan’s arrest could be used as leverage for a prisoner trade.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren Prepares For 2020 Presidential Run

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts announced yesterday she was filing paperwork to start an exploratory committee for president, which is a big step towards running for the Democratic nomination for the White House in 2020.

She is the most well-known Democrat so far to make a step towards running for president.

President Donald Trump have mocked her often with the nickname, “Pocahontas,” because of her claims to be a descendant of Native Americans.

Warren released a DNA test in October that had evidence of a Native American ancestor from six to 10 generations ago. But the Cherokee Nation said a DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship.

Trump said Warren should ask her psychiatrist if she could run for president. He said he was happy she was running and that he would win big against any Democratic challenger.

Some potential big-name liberals who might run for president are Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Cali), or former Vice-President Joe Biden.

The first debates are expected in June. The 2020 election season will start in February 2020 with the Iowa caucus.

Teenager Boy Commits Suicide After Accidentally Killing Friend

In a suburb near Atlanta, Georgia yesterday afternoon — a teenager boy accidentally shot and killed another teenager, then shot and killed himself.

Police said there were four teenager boys who got together in a shed.

One of them, 15-year old Devin Hodges, pulled out a handgun to show it off then accidentally shot and killed a 17-year old boy, Chad Carless. The two other teenagers ran away.

The boy with the gun stayed there and called 911. When police officers arrived, they found Carless, who was shot and killed, deceased in the shed. They saw Hodges running between two homes, then shooting and killing himself.

The Gwinnett Police Department said their thoughts are with the families of both these young men.

Young Woman Killed by Lion in North Carolina

A 22-year old worker at an animal center was killed by a lion who escaped. This happened on Sunday at the Conservators Center near Durham.

The woman’s name was Alexandra Black. She was on her 10th day of work at the center.

What happened — Black was with a team cleaning an enclosure. The lion, named Matthai (14), was in a separate and locked space but somehow got out and attacked Black.

Workers at the center tried to tranquilize the lion, but couldn’t. Police officers shot and killed it.

Black’s family said she was a beautiful, young woman who had goals of a career working with animals. They are mourning.

There is an investigation on what happened.

[Advertisement] There is a big problem with Deaf Education. An example is that children need role models, but there are not enough Deaf teachers.

We need more POC teachers so the students can look up to them and feel a connection.

We at Boston University are trying to look at how we can turn the problem into a solution. We strongly believe in the bilingual instruction approach in the classroom. Those problems and negative things will turn into solutions. Do you want to be a part of this solution?

Boston University does a lot of different research. Most of the research is focused on how children acquire language.

Boston is a beautiful city with rich history.

NASA Probe Successfully Explores Distant Icy Rock

NASA’s New Horizons space probe, which was launched in 2006 to study Pluto and objects beyond the Solar System, just did a successful fly-by of a small, icy rock that is shaped like a peanut.

The rock, named Ultima Thule, is 4 billion miles away. Its size is about 22 miles by 9 miles. It spins.

ABC News said this was the most distant exploration of another world.

Scientists said it was like a bullet intersecting with another bullet. There is a blurry photo of the rock. Better quality images will come in the future after it is transmitted over space.

The probe took close-up images of Pluto three years ago.

Scientists hope to continue this mission with more targets even further away in space. The goal of this mission is to understand more on how the solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago.

That is all for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
