Death of Delaware Family

A sad incident recently happened in a community named Prices Corner in the state of Delaware. This incident is called the murder-suicide. A family of 5 people died last Monday around 8pm. It seems that a man named Matthew Edwards who is 43 years old gunned down his wife, Julie who is 41 years old, and then their three kids who were 6, 4, and 3 years old. After that he shot himself. What happened was that apparently the family was supposed to go to a conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Matthew, the father, arrived from North Carolina from what it seems to be that he was living and working there. He was planning to join his wife and the kids to that conference. When he arrived, that seems to be the time that he shot his family then shot himself. The marriage between Matthew and Julie had been turning rocky and then Matthew lost  his job. Other people did notice that Matthew was not happy a few days before he shot his family. The eldest son who is 6 years old has Williams syndrome. So, Julie, the mother, was heavily involved with the Williams Syndrome Association. The people involved with this association are affected from this incident because they befriended Julie and the eldest son as well. The police is still investigating this matter on what the motive is behind this murder-suicide. Very sad.

Beauty Queen Leaves Pageant Because of #metoo Joke

One woman named Maude Gorman was Miss Plymouth County running in the Miss Massachusetts pageant competition under the Miss America Organization last week. Gorman decided to leave the pageant and remove her crown as Miss Plymouth because of an incident that the emcees made on stage during the Miss Massachusetts competition night. What happened was that the emcees performed a short skit related with the recent decision about Miss America deciding to remove the swimsuit part of the competition. One of the emcees who was a female, acted like one of the beauty queens being upset about removing the swimsuit part. The other emcee who was a male, acted like God and responded with a sign that says “#metoo.” Some people in the audience laughed then the emcees proceeded with the program. Gorman mentioned that she did not see the skit, but she could hear what the emcees were saying on stage. She felt violated and disgusted that the emcees would make fun of the “#metoo” movement. Gorman is a survivor of a gang rape. She was raped by 3 men when she was 13 years old. It took her three years to move on. She graduated with honors and now plans on going on a college tour to spread awareness about sexual assault. She has no intentions of returning to the pageant at all as she is happy to leave all that behind. The Miss Massachusetts Board of Directors offered an apology for what happened as they said that the skit was not approved by the Board. From now on, the Board will screen the emcees plan and presentation to prevent from this happening again.

91 Years Old Man Severely Beaten

This happened on July 4th when Rodolfo Rodriguez, 91 years old man, went for a walk in his neighborhood Willowbrook in the Los Angeles area. He passed a woman with a small girl. The woman had a brick in her hand and began hitting on Rodolfo and yelling, “Go back to Mexico!” About three or four other men joined in and started to beat Rodolfo up. A neighbor filmed this incident and now the police are looking for the suspects. Rodolfo is a permanent resident of the US, but he has a family living in Mexico so he usually spends most of his time in Mexico and visits other family members in California twice a year. So, this incident was shocking for Rodolfo. After he was beaten up, it was not until later that his grandson found him on the sidewalk bloodied and bruised. Rodolfo was not able to walk. He was brought to the hospital with a broken cheekbone, two broken ribs, and some head injuries.. Right now he is being treated, but he shared that he was so confused why this happened since he is a permanent resident of the US. People in the neighborhood are concerned about this crime. Some people mentioned that the woman had a small girl who was with her and she seemed to be only 4 years old. So some people are concerned about what she witnessed and the police said this is a hate crime.

Starbucks Ditching Plastic Straws

Starbucks recently made a big announcement that all Starbucks locations will no longer serve plastic straws. It is expected by the year 2020, there will be no more plastic straws at Starbucks. Approximately 9 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the waters worldwide every year. Plastic straws make 4% of that plastic waste. One advocacy group named 5Gyres mentioned that the top sources for plastic are bags, water bottles, to go containers, to go cups, and straws. Starting this fall in Seattle and Vancouver, Starbucks will no longer have plastic straws and will provide strawless lids and biodegradable straws (such as paper). This is expected to roll out to the other locations throughout the year and onwards until 2020 when none of the Starbucks locations in the world will have plastic straws anymore. People are encouraging others to buy a reusable straw.  Last February, Dunkin’ Donuts mentioned that the company will eliminate all foam cups from all store locations by 2020. McDonald’s said it would begin switching plastic straws to paper straws starting in England and Ireland then U.S.A. The vice president of the Global Social Impact for Starbucks, Colleen Chapman, stated that “Not using a straw is the best thing we can do for the environment.” However, not everyone agrees. People with disabilities spoke up about this. They mentioned that they felt like Starbucks excluded them. Some people with disabilities heavily rely on straws. One person named Kathryn Carroll who is a policy analyst under the Disability Rights Center. She felt offended that Starbucks did not bother to check in with people with disabilities to see what they think. They made the decision on their own. I am curious what you think?

Southwest No longer Serving Peanuts

Southwest Airlines recently announced that they will no longer be serving their famous peanuts as snacks during flights. Peanuts were very iconic for the Southwest Airlines. Southwest has been serving peanuts since the 1970’s so this is a big change for them. The reason for putting a halt on giving peanuts is because of more people are allergic or has sensitivities to peanuts. It is not just the issue of serving peanuts, but also the issue of people eating them then the oil from the peanuts can get on the seating area like the armchair or the small table, etc. Some people have severe allergies to peanuts so if they touch that oil that the previous person has left from the peanuts and the area has not been cleaned yet, it becomes an issue. Southwest just decided that it would be easier to stop giving peanuts on flights. However, do not worry! Southwest still will give free snacks! It will now be pretzels, corn or veggie chips, and cookies. Southwest wants to give a peanut-free environment that people can feel safe to eat the snacks. So, now you can keep this in mind for the next time you ride on a Southwest airline and probably notice no more peanuts.
