Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! It is Tuesday, June 19. Ready for news?
“Juneteenth” Marks End of Slavery
Today is a holiday known as “Juneteenth,” which is when people remember the end of slavery in the U.S. There are various events and parades to mark this day across America today.
Slavery officially ended with President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that took effect in 1863, but there were still enslaved people because others in faraway places didn’t get an update.
The “full end” of slavery was more than two years later — on June 19, 1865 when a military officer announced in Galveston, Texas that all slaves were free. There was a celebration.
President Trump recognized this day in a statement, saying it is a historic day and that we recommit ourselves that all people are created equal.
Today is a day where many discuss the effects of slavery and various barriers that are still there. There are many that want to make Juneteenth an official national holiday.
News Briefs: Trump’s China Tariffs; Trump Defends Actions on Border
1) President Trump announced yesterday he wants to identify $200 billion worth of Chinese exports that he wants to slap on tariffs of 10%.
This is after he announced on Friday that his administration will put a 25% tariff on $50 billion of goods from China.
China said they will respond with their own tariffs, which Trump warned them not to do, threatening an additional $200 billion in tariffs.
2) Trump has continued to defend his administration’s commitment to arresting all people who illegally cross the border, which results in the separation of children they bring.
Trump is calling on Congress to change laws and said Democrats want the “illegal immigrants” to pour into and infest our country.
There are now two Republican bills on immigration in the House with votes expected this week.
One is very conservative and one is a compromise bill with support from both conservative and moderate Republicans. But it is not clear if the bills will have an impact on child separations or if it was on general immigration issues. Maybe they’ll add things to it as they go through discussions.
Also, a Republican and a Democratic Senator said they would introduce bills to fix the issue of child separation. So there is a lot of activity on Capitol Hill on this issue.
There is an ever-increasing amount of pressure by various people and entities for the Trump administration to end this policy and calls for the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen to resign.
Rapper XXXTentacion Shot and Killed
Rapper XXXTentacion was shot and killed yesterday (Monday) afternoon in South Florida as he sat in his BMW sports car outside of a motorcycle shop.
XXXTenaction’s real name is Jahseh Onfroy and he was 20.
Police said there were two men who went to his car, one shot at him. The two men took a Louis Vuitton bag and got away in a SUV.
XXXTentacion was transported to a hospital and was pronounced dead. Police has not identified any suspects, it’s still under investigation.
He was a successful artist who was a rising star but was a controversial person because of serious accusations of domestic violence by his pregnant girlfriend who said he beat her up. He had pending criminal cases. He is now gone.
“Black Panther” Hero Gives Award to Real-Life Hero
Last night was the MTV Movie and TV Awards.
Black Panther movie star Chadwick Boseman won the “Best Hero” award, then while on stage, called a “real-life” hero, James Shaw Jr. on stage.
Shaw is the one who rushed and grabbed away an AR-15 rifle from a gunman who had already shot and killed four people at a Waffle House in Tennessee, and was apparently going to continue to shoot at others before he was stopped.
Shaw was injured, grazed by a bullet and had his hand burned from grabbing the hot rifle barrel. He later raised over $200,000 on GoFundMe to help the victims.
Boseman gave Shaw his award and said it would live at his house, that he was a real hero.
Monkeys Help Rescue Leopard Stuck in Well
In India, a troop of monkeys are hailed as heroes for saving a leopard that was stuck at the bottom of a well.
What happened: on June 11 at an area near a temple, people saw monkeys jumping up and chattering at the top of the well. When they looked at the bottom, they saw the leopard swimming with only it’s head above water.
Rangers were called to the scene. They lowered a ladder and the leopard was able to grip it and climb out, then ran away into a forest.
There were many people who watched this unfold from the top of a building and cheered when the leopard ran away safely.
Nice job, monkeys.
Two Python News
I will share two news related with pythons.
1) The first is in Indonesia — a 23-foot long python swallowed a 54-year old woman, Wa Tiba, near her vegetable garden. When her family noticed her missing on Friday, they went to check her garden and only saw her flashlight and shoes.
After searching for her, they found the snake with a bloated belly close by.
They killed the snake, opened up its belly, and found the woman’s body, still fully clothed. The family said she was swallowed headfirst. Terrible.
2) The second is in India — when a 18-foot python who killed and ate a goat close to school grounds, concerned people in the area called a forest ranger, Sanjay Dutta, to come and take away the snake.
Dutta used a pole and gloves to capture it, then put it on his neck to allow others take pictures of him.
But the snake wrapped itself around him, tightening itself. Dutta walked away, remaining cool, and with another man’s help, freed himself, holding down the snake’s head.
He then put the snake in his car and released it in the wild.
Wow. That’s the two python news.
Three Deaf Families on A&E Special “Deaf Out Loud”
There will be three Deaf families featured on a new documentary special on A&E on September 5.
The title is “Deaf Out Loud” and the executive producer is Marlee Matlin. She tweeted that it will premiere after the season finale of “Born This Way.” She said the trailer is coming soon.
The three Deaf families made announcements that they will be on it.
The first — April and Paco Garcia posted on Facebook that they and their children will be on it. They are from Texas.
The second family is the well-known “ASL Nook” family with parents Sheena McFeely and Manny Johnson and their two kids, Shay and Ivy. They also live in Texas.
The third family is Mick and Rachel Posner and their children from Connecticut. They announced it on Facebook.
The families in their announcements encouraged us to come out to support the show so it can become a series, a “Deaf reality show.” Right now it’s scheduled for a one-time special. So there’s potential there for more, depending on people’s support.
I’ve linked to the families’ announcements in the transcript below so you can look at more images and see their excitement.
This show was produced by Bunim-Murray Productions. I’ll share the trailer when it comes out.
