President Trump Withdraws U.S. From Iran Nuclear Deal
President Trump announced that the U.S. would be leaving the Iran nuclear deal, which is something he has said he would do throughout his campaign and presidency.
Trump said when he makes promises, he keeps them.
In a speech from the White House, Trump said is doing this to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
He said Iran is a state sponsor of terror, who has killed hundreds of American citizens.
Trump said they had proof that Iranian leaders were lying about not pursuing nuclear weapons, and cited Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “evidence” from his speech last week.
Trump said Iran has continued to build their nuclear weapons program. He said Iran was still testing ballistic missiles and developing other weapons. He said it was clear that the deal was not enough to prevent Iran from getting dangerous weapons.
Trump warned that any nation who helps Iran with nuclear weapons could face economic sanctions.
He then signed a presidential memo to impose economic sanctions against Iran.
Trump then said the Sec. of State Pompeo is on his way to North Korea to discuss the upcoming summit and to work on freeing three Americans who are detained there.
This is yet another big meeting for North Korea — their leader Kim Jong Un met with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier today.
Back to the nuclear deal — it was made in 2015 under previous President Obama’s leadership, was for Iran to greatly minimize their nuclear facilities and allow monitoring of their nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. That was the deal. The main goal was to be sure Iran would never develop a nuclear bomb.
France, Germany, the U.K., the European Union, China, and Russia were parties to the deal. France, Germany, and the UK had encouraged Trump to stay in the deal.
But now Trump is pulling out of that deal. It is yet another bold foreign policy decision by him, after he pulled out of the Paris climate accord and announced the U.S. Embassy would be moved to Jerusalem.
Democrats warn that this decision would hurt the U.S.’ relationship with allies, hurt it’s credibility in making future deals, and encourage Iran to rip up the deal with other countries and pursue nuclear weapons.
New York’s Attorney General Resigns Over Abuse Allegations
The New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat, has resigned after an article in The New Yorker described him being physically and verbally violent with four women who he had relationships with.
Two women shared their identities, saying Eric hit and choked them and would make threats against them. Two other women who remained anonymous said he slapped them also. So all four had very negative accusations against him.
He issued a statement defending himself on Twitter, saying this was a part of consensual sexual activity. See this.
Tweet: ”In the privacy of intimate relationships, I have engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity. I have not assaulted anyone. I have never engaged in non-consensual sex, which is a line I would not cross.”
Three hours after the article was published, he announced his resignation. He said he “strongly contest(s)” the allegations, but is resigning because he can’t do his job.
This comes as a shock to many because Eric was one of the leaders of the #MeToo movement, with women being open about their experiences of abuse. He also started legal action against Harvey Weinstein.
Now the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said they have opened an investigation on Eric.
Eric has also been an outspoken critic of President Trump, and now several conservatives and Republicans are criticizing him for being a hypocrite.
President Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., shared a old tweet by his father in 2013 where Trump said Eric was worse than two other New York politicians who had sex scandals. See this.
Tweet: “Weiner is gone, Spitzer is gone - next will be lightweight A.G. Eric Schneiderman. Is he a crook? Wait and see, worse than Spitzer or Weiner”
Spitzer resigned after he was accused of paying prostitutes, while Anthony Weiner is now in prison for sexting a minor.
Trump Jr. said it is like his father can see in the future.
We’ll see what happens in Eric Schneiderman’s investigation.
Woman Attacked by Crocodile Loses Arm, Weds Husband Days Later
In Zimbabwe, a woman who was ready to get married had a terrible thing happen to her — a crocodile bit off her right arm. Her name is Zanele Ndlovu and she still got married a few days later.
What happened — Zanele was canoeing with her now-husband, Jamie Fox, in the Upper Zambei River last week. They used inflatable vessels and was in a group.
A 8-foot crocodile attacked her from the water and bit her arm and the canoe, causing it to deflate and sink. It bit her again, trying to pull her to the bottom of the river.
Jamie was thrown off, but swam quickly to her, grabbed her waist, and punched the crocodile. But it did a “death roll,” tearing off a part of Zanele’s arm.
The two got to dry land. A tour guide who had first aid training tied a tourniquet on her arm and called for a helicopter to take her to the hospital. Doctors amputated what was left of the arm.
Zanele and Jamie planned to get married at a club, but because of her injuries, had a wedding at a hospital chapel with family and friends attending.
She said she spent a lot of time preparing for the wedding and didn’t know that fate would have her being wed in a hospital chapel with one limb missing, but she was not complaining, she was happy, and she has a wonderful husband.
The two plan to move to the UK, where Jamie is from.
As for the crocodile, park rangers managed to identify it and shot and killed it out of concern it would attack other tourists after tasting human flesh.
NRA Names Oliver North from Iran-Contra Scandal As New President
The National Rifle Association (NRA) announced their next president will be Oliver North, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel.
He is infamous for being involved in a big political scandal during President Reagan’s second term — the Iran-Contra scandal during the mid-1980’s. This was when the U.S. government secretly sold weapons to Iran and used the money to support rebels in Nicaragua who were fighting communist leaders, ignoring laws passed by Congress that prohibited this.
Oliver was an aide in the Reagan administration and was a key person in arranging the purchases. He testified before Congress about it and defended the covert operations, saying “we live in a dangerous world.”
He said he did lie and cover up the actions to protect his superiors and President Reagan, and also said his superiors and Reagan knew and approved what he did. Oliver was convicted of three felonies, but they were overturned by a federal judge.
He has been on the NRA’s board of directors for many years and worked as a Fox News host, but will retire from that role.
Now he will lead the NRA as the organization continues to use their lobbying power and wealth to advocate for gun rights. They are facing more and more opposition, most recently by students from Parkland, Florida.
NRA’s another leader is CEO Wayne LaPierre.
Florida Deputy Fatally Shot During Neighbor Dispute
A Florida deputy, William Gentry, was shot and killed on Sunday night after he responded to a dispute between neighbors.
What happened — a homeowner called 911 to report that her neighbor shot her cat.
Deputy Gentry, with a deputy-in-training, went to the neighbor’s home. The resident, Joseph Ables (69), shot at Gentry in the head.
He was airlifted to a hospital but died yesterday at 40 years old.
The gunman, Ables, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, but now that Gentry has died, the charges will likely be upgraded.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said this was a common neighbor dispute that deputies go to all the time, but that this is the worst that could happen.
Gentry’s organs will be donated. He leaves behind a brother who is also a deputy for the Highlands County Sheriff’s Department.
First Lady Will Combat Online Bullying
Yesterday, Melania Trump gave a speech at the White House to announce her first official initiative as First Lady. President Trump was in the audience looking on.
The initiative, called “Be Best”, wants to educate children on wellness, opioid abuse, and social media use.
Melania also talked about respect, inclusion, emotional well-being, and awareness. She condemned bullying and negative online behavior.
Many critics were quick to point out her husband’s actions on the internet, referring to his many controversial tweets and comments.
It is not often we see Melania give a presentation or make a public appearance.
With the current and ongoing controversies centered around the Stormy Daniels lawsuit over the last few weeks, support for Melania has gone up. She has not commented publicly on the accusations.
A poll from CNN shows that respondents actually like the First Lady more than the president. The poll shows her approval rate at 57%. Donald Trump’s approval rating is 41%.
President Trump signed an official proclamation naming May 7th, “Be Best Day”.
