01 Trump’s Comments: DACA, Border Wall, Mueller
Yesterday President Trump made a lot of comments to media at the White House. Here’s some highlights.
— Trump said he wants a deal on immigration, that his vision is for DACA Dreamers to be able to have citizenship in 10-12 years if they do a “great job.”
— Trump said he might extend the deadline for the DACA program past March 5 if there is no immigration deal.
— He wants more controls on chain migration and significantly reducing the diversity lottery program.
— Trump said he wants $25 billion for the wall along the Mexican border except for areas with mountains or rough water. He said it will be built under budget.
— Trump wants another $5 billion for other security along the border.
— Trump said he looks forward to talking with Special Counsel Mueller. He said there is no collusion, no obstruction.
— He predicts the interview will be in two or three weeks, depending on his lawyers. Trump said he would do it under oath, not like Hillary with her FBI interview.
— Trump said we will find out if Mueller will be fair to him in the investigation. He repeated that there was no collusion. He said he was a much better candidate than Hillary, that he beat the Clinton machine.
Today President Trump is in Switzerland to visit and give a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, an annual gathering of world leaders, billionaires, and celebrities.
It is Trump’s first time there — he was never invited as a businessman — and he is the first U.S. president to attend since Bill Clinton in 2000.
He met with British PM Theresa May and then with Israel’s PM Netanyahu today. His speech is tomorrow, where he is expected to continue to talk about “America First.”
Trump’s wife, Melania, wasn’t with him — she had previously planned to go with him, but cancelled it. She went to the Holocaust Museum today and is now in south Florida at the Mar-a-Lago club.
02 Satanic Temple Sues Missouri Over Abortion Rights
In Missouri — there is a legal battle in their state Supreme Court about abortion rights — the state requires women to have a three-day waiting period, and for doctors to offer an ultrasound to hear the heartbeat, and give them a handout saying “the life of each human begins at conception.”
A group called the “Satanic Temple” sued the state on behalf of an anonymous woman, saying the ultrasound requirement was medically unnecessary and a violation of her personal religious beliefs.
Now Missouri’s Solicitor General (top lawyer) has confirmed/clarified that women are not required to do a ultrasound — they can decline it.
The court case is not over, but this announcement means abortion providers in the state can’t “pressure” women to have ultrasounds — previously they thought it was required.
What is the Satanic Temple? They say they don’t believe in a literal Satan but looks at the entity as a representation of rebellion against tyranny. The group often fights for separation of church and state.
03 Secret “Memo” Controversy; Justice Dept. Finds Missing FBI Text Messages
There are two big controversies in Washington, D.C. related with the Russian investigation.
The first: There is a battle between House Democrats and Republicans about a secret “memo” that Republicans, led by Rep. Nunes ( R - Calif) wrote.
The four-page memo has classified information and accuses the Obama administration’s FBI and Justice Department of abusing their spying capabilities under the FISA law to spy on Trump’s campaign.
The memo is available to be read only by members of the House in a secure room.
Some Republicans who have read it say what the FBI did threatens democracy itself. They can’t reveal what is in the memo because it is a federal crime to release classified information.
But Democrats say the memo is not accurate and misleading — with important facts omitted. They have written their own classified memo in response.
House Republicans and their supporters want the memo to be released, but the Justice Department and the FBI doesn’t want this. The FBI has not seen the memo.
We’ll see if the memo is released — and if so, Democrats say they are prepared to release their own memo.
The second controversy: The Justice Department’s Inspector General Horowitz said they have found the five months of missing text messages between two former FBI employees who used to work on the Mueller investigation team.
Horowitz said they used forensic tools to get the text messages from December 2016 to May 2017, and that the process was still ongoing. The texts will be turned over to the Justice Department and it could then be turned over to Congress.
We’ll see if those text messages will be revealed to the public. They could provide some insight of the two FBI agents’ thoughts during the early months of the investigation, after the election and when Comey was still the director.
Updates with the two school shootings this week in Texas and Kentucky:
First — in Italy, Texas, a 16-year old teenager (still unidentified) appeared in court yesterday and was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is in juvenile detention and will have his next court appearance in February.
The 15-year old girl who was shot is Noelle Jones. She is still alive — she was shot in the neck and in the stomach. She will have to be in the hospital for a long time and undergo rehabilitation. She is a member of the ROTC. A GoFundMe was set up for her.
Students and a parent told Fox 4 news that a possible motive is the boy being angry about a breakup. Others said the boy had a history of being violent, including throwing scissors at a person and making a “hit list” in 8th grade.
Second — in Benton, Kentucky — the two teenagers who died in the Marshall County High School shooting has been identified: Bailey Holt, 15 and Preston Cope, also 15.
The mother of Bailey said she called her during the shooting, but seemed to be unable to speak. She said she could hear voices and chaos in the background.
18 people were wounded — 16 of them were shot, others were hurt when trying to escape. Three of them are in critical condition at the hospital.
The shooter is a 15-year old boy (unidentified) and will appear in court today. Prosecutors want to try him as an adult. The motive is unknown.
Terrible to see two high school shootings in a week. The New York Times said there are already 11 school/college shootings this year, and it’s only January. Some of the other shootings were suicides and some had no injuries with gunshots only fired on campus or to a school bus.
Still, it’s a concerning trend.
A Deaf woman, Alyse Grady, died from a hit-and-run incident in Newark, New Jersey two Sundays ago (on January 14). She was 53 years old.
It happened at 12:30 am as she was walking across an intersection on her way home. Police say a white Hyundai car, model between 2015-2018, hit her and didn’t stop.
Alyse was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not identified any suspects or made any arrests. They say the car might have front bumper damage.
There is a GoFundMe set up for a memorial fund in her name. The funds will go to her family and also to install traffic signs.
One of her friends, Malaika, sent me a message saying she went to the Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf, was very sweet, and has a son. There are other messages on Facebook that also expresses grief over her death.
Toj: Today, I came TSD for their Deaf Space Pioneers event, where four Deaf people shared their experiences working at NASA. It’s pretty neat – let’s check it out! (Clarification: this event was hosted at Texas School for the Deaf yesterday, January 24, 2018)
