NYPD Police Officer Shot and Killed While Sitting in Police Vehicle, U.S. General Tells North Korea They Are Ready for War, Volvo Announces All Electric/Hybrid Car Lineup in 2019, Parent of Canadian Baby Wants It to be Genderless, and Deaf Female Killed in Car Accident, Deaf Driver Arrested
Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! Hope your July 4 holiday was good. Ready for news?
This early morning at 12:30 am, a NYPD police officer, Miosotis Familia (48) was shot in the head and died when she was sitting in a police truck in the Bronx. Another officer was in the truck at the time and radioed for help, police was able to find the gunman, Alexander Bonds (34), chased him, and when Alexander raised his gun, officers shot and killed him. A bystander was shot in the stomach in the crossfire but will be okay, is recovering at the hospital.
Miosotis was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m. She worked with the NYPD for 12 years. She had three children.
It appears the shooting was execution-style — the gunman purposefully wanted to kill a police officer. The shooting occurred while others were celebrating July 4 with fireworks.
Update with the North Korean ballistic missile test — North Korea has said the missile’s warhead (the front part of the missile) can handle the heat and pressure of re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. They are “suggesting” that they can put a nuclear bomb in it. North Korea doesn’t have nuclear weapons small enough to fit in a warhead, but they could develop one in several years.
In response to that, the general for the U.S. military delegation in South Korea, Gen. Vincent Brooks, said the US and South Korea are prepared to go to war with North Korea if they get the order. They say they are showing patience and restraint now, but it could change at any time.
The U.S. military and South Korean military recently did live-fire drills. Japan is now considering buying advanced weapons from the U.S. — including the THAAD anti-missile system and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
If the U.S. decides to start a war, the biggest risk would be Seoul, the capital of South Korea. North Korea has artillery guns across its border and just a single volley would send over 350 tons of explosives, destroying the city.
Volvo announced they plan to stop using normal gasoline engines in their cars starting in 2019 — they want all cars going forward to be either hybrid or fully electric. Volvo is the first major car maker to do this and hopes to sell 1 million electric cars and hybrids by 2025 and plans to create new electric and hybrid car models between 2019 and 2021.
Car market analysts have predicted there would be a “tipping point” in the future in which electric or hybrid car engines are either the same price or cheaper than gasoline engine cars — and at that point most auto makers will switch.
A baby born in British Columbia, Canada did not have a gender assigned to it — because the baby’s parent, Kori Doty, a non-binary (doesn’t identify as either a male or female) transgender, said they want for the baby, named Searyl, to decide how the baby wants to identify as when it grows up. The parent, Kori, said they refused to assign a gender just based on an inspection of the baby’s genitals.
Searyl’s Canadian health document has a “U” for its gender — the U might mean unspecified or unknown. This health document is so the baby can have an ID for Canada’s free health insurance. But as for the birth certificate, it is required to have either a male or female gender, and Kori has not been able to get an official birth certificate without a gender.
The parent Kori said when they was born, doctors decided their gender based on their private parts and that the labels were incorrect, causing Kori to do a lot of adjustments — so they want to have the child Searly be able to decide for itself.
Kori is an activist trying to have all birth certificates remove its gender designation, for all forms of I.D. to be gender free.
A Deaf woman died in a car accident yesterday morning in southwestern Virginia — on I-81. Her name was Angelina Greene (27), she was a passenger riding in a Ford Expedition SUV driven by a deaf man, Travis Martin (28). The SUV was pulling a large white trailer.
The SUV hit a 18-wheeler that was broken down and stopped on the shoulder. It had warning cones and flares out, but the driver, for some reason, crashed into the back of it. Angelina was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, while Travis appeared to be unharmed. The driver of the 18-wheeler was also unharmed.
Travis had a revoked license at the time because of a previous DUI — he was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving with a revoked license, and could face more charges. He is currently in jail without bond.
The accident caused a huge mess on the interstate with multiple crews coming to clean up the damage. The SUV was completely totaled on the right side with metal shredded up. Traffic was backed up for hours.
The death of Angelina has people in the Deaf community who knew her — there are multiple social media posts mourning her death and remembering her. She leaves behind a 5-year old daughter. Very sad.
