In Guatemala, 19 teenagers died in a fire at a children’s home/shelter. Apparently all of the deceased were girls. Before the fire started, there was a riot at a home after some of the children said they were mistreated or sexually abused — requiring the police to come.
Apparently some students started the fire by lighting up mattresses. While many students managed to get out, 19 died and over 25 were injured. The home’s capacity is for 500 residents, but it had around 800 people inside when the fire broke out.
The shelter was used for children who were victims of abuse, were homeless, or had nowhere to go after completing sentencing at youth detention centers. Very sad.
