Yesterday in Aurora, Colorado — a deaf man died when he was hit by a train. The man has not been identified but he was 35 years old and a refugee from Myanmar who lived in the area.
The train was a RTD - Regional Transportation District - a light rail train used for commuting. The train was on a test run — it had just a conductor in it, no passengers were on the train. The rail is scheduled to open on Friday.
Local news Fox 31 posted a video that showed the man walking across the railroad even when there was flashing lights and the crossing guards was down. Here it is — the video stops before impact.
Very sad. A witness said he saw a body flying. Firefighters arrived around four minutes later and brought him to the hospital, but he died.
It is said that there were software tests of the crossing where the lights and arms would go down even though there was no train crossing — which might have contributed to the man thinking it was only a test. Or he was not paying attention and didn’t hear the train coming. An Aurora police official said he might have been intoxicated.
