Female Suspect Arrested in Killing of Kim Jong Nam, Comedian Acts as Fake Interpreter in Ireland, England Man Jailed for Attempted Rape of 94-Year DeafBlind Woman, ZVRS Announces Acquisition of Purple Communications, and President Trump Hosts Joint Press Conference with Israeli Prime Minister.
Hello, welcome to the Daily Moth! It is Wednesday, February 15. Ready for news?
Update with the killing of North Korea leader Kim Jong Un’s half brother Kim Jong Nam at an airport in Malaysia — a female suspect was arrested. She had a Vietnamese passport.
Malaysian police said two females approached Kim Jong Nam from opposite sides and placed a cloth with a liquid on his face. Both women left the area and Kim Jong Nam went to a restroom (probably to wash his face), then went to a customer service desk to ask for police, then went down to see the police, then went to a medical clinic, went into an ambulance and died on the way to the hospital.
His body is now at a hospital where an autopsy is expected to identify the cause of death. There were three North Korean embassy vehicles outside of the hospital, along with multiple Malaysian police officers. It is said that North Korea asked for the body to be turned over without an autopsy, but Malaysian authorities declined, saying it was their duty to finish the investigation because the crime happened in Malaysia.
There is a total of six suspects that police are looking for. South Korean intelligence said they believe that the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his assassination and that there was an attempt that failed in 2012.
In Cork, Ireland — there was a comedian who acted as a fake sign language interpreter while the Prime Minister (Taoiseach) of Ireland, Enda Kenny, was giving a speech about Brexit. The comedian’s name is Ross Browne. During the speech, he made several signs such as “pinocchio,” “bull****,” gave him the middle finger, did some fake signs — and it went on for almost a minute before someone approached him and asked him to leave.
The President of the Irish Deaf Society said the comedian is fortunate to get attention because Irish Deaf people have been struggling to get media recognition that they are often excluded from society due to a lack of government recognition of Irish Sign Language. He said it was ironical that the event organizers only knew that the interpreter was fake because they had denied an earlier request for a sign language interpreter.
The president asked the comedian to ask him to help bring attention to the barriers Irish Deaf people face and the need for awareness of Irish Sign Language.
The Cork Deaf Association (CDA) released a statement that said the comedian falsely claimed he consulted with CDA before the ‘interpreting gig.” The CDA said they did not know of the comedian’s plans and said that before the event, he actually spoke with the CDA’s receptionist and asked to borrow a hearing aid or a fundraising bib with their logo on it for a comedy sketch, but was denied.
The CDA said some Deaf people thought it was funny but that many others thought it was offensive and a mockery of Irish Sign Language — adding that there needs to be government recognition of Irish Sign Language and that there is a proposed bill to recognize Irish Sign Language that is moving very slowly in the Irish legislature — and that the real tragedy here is that the absence of interpreters for public events is common. They’ve invited Brown to come to the CDA to learn about the issues.
The Council of Irish Sign Language Interpreters (CISLI) said they were disappointed and faintly amused by the event — and said explicitly that Browne was not booked to interpret for the event and that it was disheartening that he used this tactic to undermine professional sign language interpreters, Deaf people, and Irish Sign Language — and that they deserve better than being used for a viral prank.
Browne posted a comment under his Facebook video saying he has spread awareness about the Irish Deaf people’s struggles to get sign language recognition and their lack of services.

In England — a man is jailed for 14 years because he tried to rape a 94-year old DeafBlind woman during a burglary in her house after midnight. This happened several months ago and the DeafBlind woman has since passed away (not because of the incident, but of old age).
The rapist’s name is Gregory Willis and he got into the woman’s house after midnight through an open door while her family was inside. The family noticed that a door was open and found the man on the elderly woman’s bed — he had pulled her pajamas off, and seemed to be ready to rape her before a family member caught him and kicked him out of the house. He came back a second time, and police arrested him. He had a car key that belonged to the family in his pocket.
Terrible — it appears the woman did not realize what was happening to her — she was very frail and did not have short-term memory and appeared to not be able to communicate.
The rapist has apologized to the family and said he was under the influence of a substance and did not remember what happened.
The judge who ordered him jailed said it was a deeply shocking and horrible event.
He’s now in prison and will remain there for 14 years.
ZVRS announced today it is acquiring Purple Communications. The CEO of ZVRS, Sherri Turpin, made the announcement via video with her interpreter, Kama Krakowiak. Sherri said she was excited to acquire Purple and is committed to raising the bar in technology and customer experience. The video ended with a “new” logo that had both ZVRS and Purple logos in it.
In their press release, it said ZVRS and Purple would be combined to bring innovation and competition to the VRS market, bring better products for consumers, and is committed to improve interoperability amongst VRS providers.
The President and CEO of Purple, Robert Rae, said this acquisition would bring a brighter future for both companies.
Chris Wagner, the former NAD President, will be ZVRS’ new Chief Operating Officer. Greg Hlibok will be the new company’s Chief Legal Officer — previously he was ZVRS’ Chief Compliance Officer (and before that he served as the chief of the Disability Rights Office at the FCC).
This is a big development that will have an impact on employees and customers of both companies. ZVRS said on their website that they are working with Purple to create a simple, streamlined process to transition user accounts and will communicate with customers and that in the immediate future, customers will continue to use the same VRS systems. Both companies will keep their brands but operate as one company.
On their website they have listed a customer hotline with a VP number for any questions.
Purple previously owned a company, ClearCaptions — that provides captions on phone calls. ZVRS said ClearCaptions is now a separate company.
Today the Prime Minister of Israel, Ben Netanyahu, visited the White House and had a joint press conference with President Trump. Here are some highlights.
Trump said Netanyahu was a long-time friend of his and his family, that Israel was a symbol to the world of resilience in the face of oppression and genocide, and that we would never forget what the Jewish people have endured. Trump said there are serious security challenges facing Israel — pointing to nuclear threats from Iran — and said he would prevent Iran from ever developing a nuclear weapon. He said the UN has treated Israel unfairly and would support Israel in peace talks with Palestine, and said Israel would have to make some compromises. Trump said it could be a two-state solution or a one-state solution, but he supports whatever both parties like.
Netanyahu thanked Trump and his wife for the hospitality and said Israel has no better ally than the U.S. He said Israel and U.S. values are under attack by radical islamic terrorism and believed Trump can help to defeat this.
Trump was asked about the resignation of Michael Flynn — and Trump said he was a wonderful man that was treated very unfairly by the media — the fake media. He also criticized the leaks from the intelligence community (that revealed Flynn did discuss Obama sanctions with a Russian diplomat) and said it was criminal.
Trump then asked Netanyahu to hold back on building Israeli settlements until a new deal is made.
Netanyahu said a “two-state solution” is just a label — but the substance is that Palestinians must recognize the Jewish state and stop calling for Israel’s destruction and stop teaching young kids in schools and in mosques to call for Israel’s destruction.
Trump said Israelites will need to show flexibility to make a deal and that he thinks Israel will be able to make a deal and said the Palestine had to acknowledge Israel in order to make a deal.
Netanyahu said Iran must be prevented from ever getting nuclear weapons and brought up their ballistic missile tests an that they wrote in Hebrew on the missiles that said “Israel must be destroyed” — and said Iran could eventually want to bomb the U.S.
He then said a two-state solution would only be possible if Palestine recognized Israel as a country and their security control of the entire area — otherwise it would be just a fantasy and will create another failed state that provides a terroristic Islamic dictatorship.
That was the end of the press conference. We’ll see what more emerges out of their meeting today in the White House. Trump gives Israel a very different relationship than Obama — who often butted heads with Netanyahu in being opposed to Israel expansion in disputed Palestine lands.
That is all for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light!
