The Doomsday Clock has moved 30 seconds closer to midnight. It is a “clock” that was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit organization that maintains the clock as a sign of how close we are from total destruction of all humanity — the end of the world — the apocalypse.
The bulletin of scientists was created in 1945 by Manhattan Project scientists (the ones who invented the atomic/nuclear bombs) — and the group started the clock in 1947 with the minute hand being updated every year based on the events of the world — tracking the threat of climate change, nuclear war, or cyber technology. It was at three minutes for the past year, but now it’s moved 30 seconds closer to midnight — because of one person — Donald Trump.
Here is a statement from the executive director and publisher of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: “This year’s Clock deliberations felt more urgent than usual…as trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news was on the rise, and words were used by a President-elect of the United States in cavalier and often reckless ways to address the twin threats of nuclear weapons and climate change.”
The closest the clock has been to midnight was in 1953, when the U.S. and Soviet Union tested hydrogen bombs. The furthest to midnight is 17 minutes in 1991, when the U.S. and USSR signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (eliminated nuclear weapons) and the Soviet Union dissolved.
